Thanks to funding provided through Bay Hospitals Charity, patients will now be served meals on specially selected blue crockery. This project has been developed by the Catering Department in partnership with the Admiral Nursing team, with the aim of supporting patients with dementia while enhancing mealtimes for all patients.

Research has shown that blue plates can help people living with dementia distinguish food more easily by creating a stronger contrast between the meal and the plate. As blue is not a colour commonly found in food, it can make meals appear clearer and more appetising. Trials in other NHS trusts have also demonstrated reductions in food waste of up to 20%, helping to improve nutrition while supporting environmental sustainability goals.

By funding this initiative, Bay Hospitals Charity is helping to create a more dementia-friendly environment, improve patient wellbeing and support the Trust’s Green Plan through reducing unnecessary food waste.

We are delighted to see this project come to life and would like to thank everyone involved in making it possible.

Together, we are making small changes that can have a meaningful impact on patient care.
