All funds raised through this exciting event will support enhanced patient care across University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT). It is the first time that the charity is offering this walk, which is full of adventure, fun, stunning scenery and rich history.

The guided walk is perfect for families or individuals and will start at 11.15am on Saturday 5 September 2026. Participants will walk from Canal Foot in Ulverston and across part of the sands of Morecambe Bay to historic Chapel Island and back again under the expert guidance of Raymond Porter, who regularly leads these walks.

Unlike the traditional Cross-Bay walks, the Chapel Island route has been chosen because of its appeal to people of all ages, offering a shorter crossing and the opportunity to explore the island itself, with its fascinating history and breath taking views across Morecambe Bay.

Nicola Elson, Charity Administrator for Bay Hospitals Charity, is encouraging families to take part after enjoying the walk herself with her daughter and friends.

Nicola said: “I think it’s a really nice walk. It lends itself much better to families because there’s something to have a good old explore of once you get there. I think it’s more interesting for children than the longer Cross-Bay walks and much more appealing for families.

“We did the walk last year with my daughter and a group of friends and children through a local Scout group’s fundraising event. Everyone really enjoyed it and we had such a lovely day. One of my favourite memories is that the children found a starfish out on the sands. They were absolutely fascinated by it and I was too, because I didn’t expect to find something like that in the Bay. They spent ages looking at it and talking about it. It made the whole experience feel a bit magical.”

Nicola said the chance to combine adventure, history and nature makes the walk particularly memorable for younger participants.

“The children love getting to the island and having a look around. There’s the remains of the old chapel to discover and lots to explore. It feels like a real adventure. I always think children enjoy a walk more when they have somewhere interesting to get to, rather than simply turning around and heading back again.

“I would absolutely recommend the walk. It’s something a bit different and it gives families and individuals the chance to spend quality time outdoors while supporting a fantastic cause. Morecambe Bay is such a beautiful place and seeing it on foot really gives you a different perspective. Every ticket sold and every pound raised will help us continue supporting patients and services across our hospitals, making a real difference when people need care the most.”

Chapel Island, a historic limestone outcrop in the Leven Estuary, takes its name from a medieval refuge chapel that once provided shelter for travellers crossing the sands. Today, it remains one of Morecambe Bay’s hidden treasures and offers stunning views of the surrounding coastline.

Places for the walk are strictly limited and tickets are available through Bay Hospitals Charity. Participants can simply enjoy the experience or seek sponsorship, with funds able to support a specific ward, department or hospital service, if desired.
