Staff at BAE Systems in Barrow donated more than £600 to Bay Hospitals Charity in aid of Furness General Hospital Oncology Unit, in memory of a colleague who passed away in 2022.

Organisers of the regular ‘Submarines Quiz’ made the donation in memory of Andrew McDonald, who died in June after developing cancer.

Karen Ashdown, one of the organisers of the event, said: “The Submarines Quiz and Raffle night has been running twice a year for approximately 20 years, and has raised circa £52,000 to date.

“The quiz is organised by a team of volunteers who either work for or have retired from BAE Systems, and we look to support different local charities each time.

“This year one of the worthy causes we chose to support was the Furness General Hospital Oncology Unit, which provided care and support to Andy and his family throughout his illness.”

Karen visited Furness General Hospital along with Andrew’s mum Brenda to make the donation to the Oncology Unit team (pictured).

Bay Hospitals Charity funds the latest equipment for University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust to help make patients more comfortable and ensure they get the best possible care and treatment.

Head of Charities and Fundraising Suzanne Lofthouse said: “It was so emotional to meet Brenda and Karen to accept this donation from the Submarines Quiz team.

“The money will be used in Andrew’s memory to support patients being cared for by the incredible Oncology Unit team.”
