There was a full house for the Bayb’s Maternity Appeal when members of Broughton Ladies Guild staged their annual bingo and raffle night in Victory Hall, Broughton.

More than 200 people played to win prizes donated by local businesses. Money from the sale of bingo cards and raffle tickets raised £1,440, which the guild’s 14 members shared equally between the appeal and Ulpha & Broughton First Responders.

Guild secretary Jean Day said:

“We stage one annual fundraising event a year for local charities and people know that thanks to the businesses that support us, they have a good chance of winning an excellent prize, which makes the evening very popular.”

Bayb’s Maternity Appeal

The guild’s £720 Bayb’s donation, together with £32.57 raised when Bayb’s appeal co-ordinator Heidi Bowron and volunteer Sheila Lord held a two-hour bucket collection at Barrow’s Costa Coffee, will go towards funding “extras” for the £12 million South Lakes Birth Centre at Furness General Hospital with the aim of making it one of the best places in the country to give birth.

These “extras” fall outside the remit of what the NHS is able to fund but add much to what the centre is able to offer both staff and patients in terms of comfort, choice, peace of mind and training.
